Photo of stone cottages in charming village of East Dean, taken 1995. Some family were wheelwrights while others smugglers, which makes for a very interesting story. The beautiful daffodils lining the road to village green and those growing wild, all around churchyard, were magnificent.

Elizabeth was dau/o John & Jane Montgomery. Our first records show Edward Redman 1767/1843 Agricultural labourer married Susanna Baker who d.1819 - had issue:-

3. Constant Redman b.1794 married Edward Burchell
4. William Redman b.2.10.1796/1874 wheelwright married Ann Shepherd who d.1893.(issue under)

WILLIAM & ELIZABETH (nee Montgomery) REDMAN Elizabeth was youngest of nine children born to John & Jane (Down) Montgomery. She married William, son/o Alfred & Dinah (Johnson) Redman. WILLIAM & ELIZABETH had issue 6:- 1. Ellen Redman bp.20.1.1878 m.11.2.1904 age 26 Charles Arthur Grigg, bachelor, able seaman Royal Navy. On HMS 'Osborne' Portsmouth. Son of pilot, Henry. They married by banns W.Wittering, SSX - witnesses William and Eva Bessie
2. Eva Bessie Redman bp.1.2.1880 m.24.4.1905 age 25 at W.Wittering to Joseph Henry Hill age 27, son/o Samuel, Petty Officer 2nd class R.N. son of Samuel (decd) witness Mary K.Redman.
3. Mary Kate Redman bp.16.10.1881 m.10.8.1912 age 30, by banns W.Witt. - Harry Saunders age 28, bachelor, of St.John's Portsea - policeman s/o William (decd), coachman. Witnesses A(
4. Abby Maria Redman bp.18.9.1887 domestic servant age 26, m.6.6.1914 Arthur George Dawes age 26, son/o George, labourer of W.Wittering. Arthur, bachelor, seaman R.N. HMS vessel 'Alecto'. Witnesses - William Henry (bro) & William Redman (father).
5. William Henry Redman bp.16.11.1884 bachelor, Petty Officer R.N. HMS 'Malaya' m.10.12.1918 age 34 Daisy Mabel Sirge spinster aged 25 of parish - dau/o William Sirge, stockman, West Itchenor - witness John Alfred Redman. At birth of son Ken, he was Petty Officer R.N. 'Southsea' - Issue;- 1.Kenneth Montgomery Redman b.9.12.1919 was bp.18.1.1920 West Itchenor, SSX. William was Petty Officer R.N. of Southsea.
6. John Alfred Redman b.c.1876 carpenter, age 38 of West Wittering m.4.12.1913 at Birdham to Emma Rhoda Mant age 34 spinster of parish. Emma, dau/o William Mant, grocer/baker - witnesses were Abby Maria Dawes and William Henry Redman his sister & brother. Issue:- Ronald Maxwell Redman age 23 bachelor, private in Royal Marines, Barcombe, SSX m.15.6.1940 Sarah Ann Jones at W.Wittering. Sarah age 27, spinster, was dau/o Edward Albert Jones, labourer of parish. John Alfred Redman & Emma Rhoda Redman were witnesses.

EDWARD REDMAN head, mar. age 34, wheelwright, journeyman born E.Wittering; Letitia, wife age 34, born Earnley. All following issue born E.Wittering, James H. scholar age 8; Charles E. scholar age 7; Arthur H. scholar age 5; William scholar age 4; Anna age 3; George age 2; Letitia age 4 months.
Census 1881 West Wittering.
JOHN REDMAN became a head constable in 1806. On 30.1.1821, John was appointed County Jailer, receiving a salary of sixty pounds pr yr. By the 1828 census, John became a publican at, George St.,Sydney - No.RO345. He was age 65 and wife was Mary (AP?) who arrived 1810. John junior was age16; Martha 14; Joseph 12; Edward 10; Rosamond 9; William 5 and Robert 15 mths. Seven children born in colony were surviving in 1838. John Redman d.26.11.1837 leaving will in Supreme Court N.S.W. P.No.855. Series 1. There is another entry for John Redman who d.26.11.1837 Pittwater,Sydney, who also left will P.No.16756. Series 3. I am afraid I don't understand how this could be - maybe two wills, one obsolete. The researcher must be aware that some names are Redman, while some may well be Redmond, as name was written just as it sounded across counter to registrar, of another coutry, at the time.

MARRIAGES IN AUSTRALIA
During a visit to East Wittering we found the Cyril Redman family, three generations descended from Edward. We had a great session about the Redman family, before visiting the graveyard nearby. The very kindly Mrs.Gentle, a Redman descendant gave us morning tea while talking about the family. We talked a lot about the Coastguard and family had an original historic windmill in their backyard. They were able to tell
