STREETER FAMILIES

JOHN HUTCHINS MONTGOMERY and

MARIA (Montgomery) BARBER

These family lines of John Hutchins Montgomery have been revealed by Michael Streeter of Eastbourne, in 2003. Many thanks... It is hoped that one day, the relationship between Hutchins and this family will be revealed. In those times moreso, family names were passed down in this way through their offspring.

JOHN HUTCHINS MONTGOMERY was born 1st November 1846 at Seaford, East Sussex and christened in the Parish Church at Seaford 6th December 1846. John married AMY MARTHA BARBER on 27th August 1874 at St.Mary's Church, Portsea, Hampshire. Records sent to me some years ago show John Hutchence Montgomery enlisted with the Royal Navy in 1861. John Hutchins Montgomery appears on the 1881 census at the Dockyard - (Minster in Sheppey) Sheerness, Kent, England and is listed on the vessel HMS 'Hydra' as a Gunner's Mate. Amy M.Montgomery (Seaman's wife) is listed on 1881 Census for Portsea, Hampshire, living at 67 William Street, with her three children:- Alice E.Montgomery age 5, born Portsmouth. John W.Montgomery age 3, born Portsmouth. Frederick G.Montgomery, 8 months, born Portsmouth. (The following census detail - Thelma)

The 1881 British Census taken at "Royal Navy Barracks" Sheerness in (Minster in Sheppey) Sheerness, Kent is :- Jno Montgomery, Gunner's Mate, age 35, born Seaford, Sussex. This seems to be the same John who was on board the vessel and in the barracks during the same Census. In the same 1881 Census at 5,6 & 7 Arlington Villas, Brighton, SSX is following list of scholars, boarders and maids:- JOHN W.V.MONTGOMERY aged 13 and born in Canada. The head of the house was Clergyman George Cotterill (46, b Nilcherry, India), wife Annie (44, born Brighton,SSX). This surely has to be a relative of some kind. Does this tie in with Edward Montgomery, 7 years born Southampton, who was in the house of Mary Montgomery and George Jeram during the 1881 Census ? All other students were born England except for one Chas King born Cape Town.

MICHAEL STREETER continues with detail of his family. This portion deals with my grandparents MARY ANN BARBER & GEORGE STREETER.

Mary Ann Barber, daughter of James Barber and Maria Montgomery, was born 1873 in Whitby, Yorkshire. The birth places of her brothers and sisters stretch along the East Yorkshire coastline from Whitby in the north to Hornsea in the south, indicating that her father, a Coastguardsman, was stationed in various places. I await his Coastguard record from PRO.

It remains a mystery how my grandfather George Streeter, born in Rotherfield, which is in the north east tip of Sussex, found Mary Ann Barber in the south west tip of Sussex in West Wittering. I believe the link is with the REDMAN family, because John A.Redman was a witness at their marriage and he was a Wheelwright as was George Streeter. There are Redmans living in Rotherfield. (See Redman story on page 4 of this web site)

Mary Ann Barber and George Streeter married at the Parish Church, West Wittering on 4th January 1898. He was 24 years and she was aged 25. Their marriage was witnessed by John A Redman and Mary Ann's sister, Jane Elizabeth Barber. I have traced George Streeter's family back to 1835 in Tenterden Kent.

George and Mary Ann Streeter set up home at No.2 Mafeking Villas, Rotherfield, East Sussex where their children were born as follows:-

1. Jesse James Streeter 1889/1974, married Rosina Jessie Caulkett and their three children are Ronald, Aubrey and Pamela. Ronald and Aubrey are living.

2. Edward George Wells Streeter b.1901, married [1] Violet Popple and had issue of two - Jean and David both deceased. Edward married [2] Thirza Parker, deceased.

3. Robert Frederick Wells Streeter 1902/1984 married Florence Oram and had issue of six all living. Iris, Kenneth, Roy [lives at Howlong, Australia], Muriel, Sylvia and Pamela.

4. Arthur Wells Streeter (Michael's father) 1904/1976 married Sarah Lilian Ladums and had issue of two Michael Wells Streeter (of this data) born 1936 and Brian Wells Streeter b.1941 married to Hannelore Jocks.

5. Olive Aline Streeter born 1905 and died before WW11

6. Jack Wells Streeter 1907/1980's. Jack married Gertrude Beech and had issue of two - Ann Streeter (deceased) and Janet Streeter.

MARY ANN STREETER (nee BARBER) died 28th April 1945 at the Borough Hospital in Eastbourne aged 75.

YESTERDAY is HISTORY - TOMORROW is a MYSTERY - TODAY is a GIFT - That is why it is called the PRESENT.
